 1. What Is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a chronic disease of
the central nervous system, the main network of nerves
that carry messages along the spinal cord between the
brain and the rest of the body. MS attacks the nerve
fibers, or axons, which transport these messages,
gradually destroying a tissue called myelin that helps
protect the fibers that transmit information. In the
most common disease pattern, relapsing-remitting MS
(RRMS), people have attacks of MS symptoms followed by
periods in which symptoms are much less severe. Other
types of MS are secondary-progressive MS (SPMS),
primary-progressive MS (PPMS) and
progressive-relapsing MS (PRMS).
