Thalamus

The thalamus is part of the limbic system, the region of the brain largely
associated with the emotions.
If the gate of the thalamus is closed, then the cortexcan shut out the world
and go into sleep-mode.
The thalamus is really a heterogeneous group of nuclei, but they all share
the same basic function - they are the gatekeeper for anything that wants to get
up to cortex.
Since the thalamus is hardly differentiable by itself, the level set
evolving in the thalamus has been coupled with two other level sets segmenting
the surrounding structures using information not only from the anisotropy map
but also from a map describing the mean diffusion.
The thalamus is a routing station for all incoming sensory impulses except
those of smell, transmitting them to higher (cerebral) nerve centers.
